Using 8.5 under Dapper
I think that this is related to xorg/aiglx. A while ago I found a fix to
stop OpenGL games becoming partly transparent under compiz: eg. export
XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 blobwars. I'm using
the i810 driver.
This seems to work for this issue as well

I just noticed that totem-mozilla is in universe and totem itself is in

I can confirm this bug on a somewhat less-than-fresh evolution install.
There are no suspicious terminal messages (beyond some spamassassin
message) and again, removing the index does nowt. Ideas?

I'm glad everything is solved now.
The main problem you had is because gnome-cups-manager suggest the usb backend
by default, while it should suggest the hp backend when available.
