management-general, I deactivated the use sound to notify etc.. and
it worked perfectly, without even giving an error message in text mode.

Could I put forward the idea of disabling compiz by default on non- nvidia

Can this please be fixed in Interpid Ibex? The bug is growing a bit of a
beard and such a basic thing should be taken care of very well.
For beginner and intermediate programmers it is demotivating when having
to double check several different configuration settings and installed
packages before
I found a workaround per a comment above. I'm using gnome-terminal, and
on some systems I use, 'screen' produces a beep/bell when I hit
'backspace'.

When I try to install Hardy from the basic Live CD distribution into a

Yes, during the upgrade procedure I had to kill the localdef processes a
few (3 or 4) times.
The upgrade tool displayed dialog boxes telling me that some packages
could not be installed due to (broken?) dependencies. After clicking
through all the dialogs I rebooted the machine. The computer

After some testing, I found that the problem is actually not in VLC but
in ffmpeg. Default version of ffmpeg in Hardy (3:0.cvs20070307-5ubuntu7:
amd64 i386) does not transcode correctly the audio. I installed an
optimized version of ffmpeg (from: http://skulboxx.com/Ubuntu/sbx/) and
both ffmpeg

I tried doing the above in KDE 4.1 rc1 (on my T42), because volume and
mute keys were not working. No luck. Other buttons seem to work. Anybody
