I'm seeing similar behaviour in Jaunty as a new regression in the last
couple of days updates. It's not happening very often - a few times an
hour - but it is happening. It does not seem like a hardware problem
because it's come on very suddenly and is on many different keys,

I see this exact same behavior with Yakuake when I have compiz running
on Kubuntu 9.04a4 (64-bit) w/nvidia 180.27. It happens all the time.
Disabling Compiz causes the terminal to work fine again.

work now (I am still booting into text mode and using 'startx' to

very high res screen mode that doesn't work properly on this system -

- Try to log in
- ctrl-alt-f1 to a console when the login hangs
- kill -9 kwin or compiz.real (depending on which you use)

There is a similar bug, bug 292549, but in that case turning off
FramebufferCompression would remove the symptoms, so I'm guessing it's
not exactly the same.

Experiencing the same problem. Running Ubuntu 8.10 and problem only
appears with a usb stick after i have formatted it using gparted.
Though, all the other devices run nicely.

The workaround that worked for me with kubuntu was to login with
failsafe and install e16. Then exit failsafe and login with e16-kde.
This then allowed me to start systemsettings>Desktop>Advanced and
uncheck "Enable direct rendering". Then apply and log out. Then log
back into kde with full effe

When I select Shut Down Ubuntu closes down but the PC does not power off, and
while the Ubuntu termination screen goes away the monitor has a cursor blinking
in the upper left corner.
