This is seriously annoying. I fully agree that the notification area
icon is just not obvious for most users, and I fully support popping up
update-manager once a week to grab the attention of those users who
haven't updated their system yet.
However, as someone who likes to install updates as

I realize that this isn't a code forum, but I truly think this is either
a bug, or requires some compile/link procedure that isn't documented
