I came here to say that it's working for me now.
I made a fresh install of karmic 9.10 and the suspend issue is finally gone: i
just have to close the lid, and it works flawlessly.
I had several issues on this machine on jaunty 9.04, i couldn't even *boot*
with the power cable attached. Apparentl

dont backport releases to closed stable version.

Adding my invalid Xorg.conf - which was NOT corrected by dpkg-

I've managed to reproduce the problem on a colleague's Toshiba laptop.

Balder2D uses non-standard (and annoying) config locations

At the moment, Balder2D stores its config in ~/balder2d and
~/config.xml. It should store them in (traditionally) a .balder2d
subdirectory or .config/balder2d. It is a pain having a folder that
contains config not hidden, and goes against naming

This is something Gnome did, not Ubuntu devs. And I'm not really sure
how feasible it would be to preserve an older version of gdm. It'd be an
extra package to support, for one. If it needed an older version of the
Gnome libraries, things would quickly get problematic.

thank for your reply. i found the problem doing a little more google
searches.
apparently, i was asked during installation if i wanted to replace the old
"menu list". at that time i wasnt sure what this menu list was, so i
answered NO. now i understand that i should have answered YES

apt-get build-dep netdiscover did not install the 'libtool' package,
which is needed to run the included autogen.sh.
Expected:
Package is buildable after doing:
apt-get source netdiscover
apt-get build-dep netdiscover

Having put a "return 1" at the head of "have_kms()" in "/usr/lib/pm-
utils/sleep.d/98smart-kernel-video" I do get my backlight back after
resume from suspend to RAM.
