I had the same problem. After installing cryptsetup the problem no
longer occurred. I assume that the cryptdisks-udev files in the
/etc/init/ and /etc/init.d somehow influence the boot process in a
positive way.

With slow upload speed it takes about 10min and when finishes it gives error

I can confirm that xserver-xorg-core version: 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.1 has not
fixed the brightness adjustment issue.
Of those having these problems, are you running an LED LCD?

I have prepared a test kernel with an upstream patch that has solved this
problem for some models of graphics card.
I would appreciate it if anyone who has the problem could test this kernel
and report on whether it solves the problem for you.
Just updated to 10.04 and I can confirm this bug. And that unmounting
the drive (which apparently is now only doable from command line) works
around the problem.
