This "minor" bug is going to cause me to switch to some other operating

I have a dell optiplex gx 260 desktop box with Pentium 4 chip.
Installed 10.04 - same issue - random black screen freezes.
It is purely random, **but I have a way to reproduce it.**

System > Admin > System Tests>
Check only the Video Tests checkbox and run through the series of tests
I might have found a reliable workaround: Delaying the loading of the
gnome-panel.
I've been running this for two days now (and have restarted over 20
times in addition for testing) and I haven't seen the problem any more.

@RussianNeuroMancer, it seems that this has been fixed already. After
having some trouble with open-jdk's mozilla plugin, I removed the
package via synaptic completely and installed sun-java6-plugin with all
it's dependencies. After restarting firefox, the applets I had trouble
with under open-jdk

More investigations show that in my case (not behind proxy) the problem
is that my ISP DNSes bar IWS servers, i.e DNS lookups fail for some
reason. Switching e.g to Googles public DNSes makes it work again. Thus,
this is my workaround until my ISP fixes this issue.

Yes, it uses ~/.eclipse, else it would not be there in the first place.

Is this still occurring in Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx"? A while back I
helped someone debug a very similar problem (most likely the same
problem) and the Evince document viewer in Lucid solved the printing
problem for most files and greatly improved things for the few remaining
files.

Sorry guys, but nothing seems to work.
I've upgraded from one Ubuntu LTS to the other (8.04 to 10.04) and flash
plug-in is not working. Cannot open youtube and other videos/animations.
Not even the purge command solved the problem (I was trying to remove it all
and re-install it in the terminal
