I ran into the exact same problem, easily fixed it by cleaning up some
old files from my boot partition.
I'm guessing you also need to clear up some space in your boot
partition. According to Df.txt you have around 18Mb free, while (my)
initrd.img is around 20 Mb.

An addendum to my last comment: it seems the entire /var/lib directory
has been wiped out. I am going to run a fresh CD install. Not good news
for ubuntu, this is a pretty serious gotcha.

Looking into the issue I found out that my video card was blacklisted,
and so I was running unity in metacity, and not in compiz. That's why
using compiz solved the issue. The bug seem to be with the 2d version of

Same problem here with a Radeon HD 4770. And I just solved it, like
eundas, in OpenGL plugin in the CompizConfig Settings Manager : when
disabling vsync.
And trust me, the problem is solved but the vsync is not disabled. In
fact it seems that this vsync option was over another one, the driver

center. they all downloaded fine into /tmp and software-center starts
but gives back:

I had to play then pause or stop the audio before resizing to get the
freeze, just for the record.

After some more trying I found the following facts: Default kernel is
vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic-pae,
but when I use vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic (i. e. without this physical address
extension) it works
perfectly. Are there boot option which prevent a fglrx crash?
