I just tested focuswriter 1.3.2.git.69e4975b-1~natty1~ppa1 from
ppa:broder/backports-tests on a Natty amd64 system running a Lubuntu
Desktop session, and a separate Natty i386 system running a Unity
session. It installs and runs on both machines. Both installations occur
without problems, as does

I have found the reason for this issue and the fix:
Due to having an android phone, and being logged into several Google services
at one time Pidgin fails to connect.
The solution is simple in the Advanced tab of Modify account add
talk.google.com for the connect server.

I can confirm that compiz --replace fixes the problem for me. For me
it's now often only the network manager applet that doesn't respond, but
sometimes other applets also fail. But in every case after doing a
compiz --replace I get all applets working.

phpmyadmin doesn't have that into account and always tries to identify
himself as root without password.
