I had shut down the system as I always do. I turned it on as I always
do, and while it was booting I got a red screen with a lot of error
messages one of which was "Kernel panic: not syncing" and it froze.
Then I powered it off and turned it on again and it booted normally.

On W520 you can install using the yellow USB 2.0 port that is at the back side
of the Lonovo ThinkPad.
Same USB key works perfect.
Installing with USB 2.0 device attached to an USB 3.0 port does not work
(does not have to be an USB 3.0 device).
