Exact same behaviour for me resulting from same upgrade to 11.10.
Lightdm remains unresponsive after password input. Can select other
user from lightdm screen, which removes the password box and does not
allow login (tty8)
Can switch back to tty7 and log back in
sudo service lightdm restart: f

Hey Ken, this looks reminiscent of bug #852345, which got fixed in
oneiric. However, the backtrace here doesn't indicate where it failed
in libdvdread; the error message sounds similar, although I'm not sure
why it would fail sometimes but not others.

the apport command does nothing - just seems to hang.
>From a bash terminal:
whereis apport
apport: /etc/apport /usr/share/apport
The only apport executable is under /usr/share/apport/apport
I think what you wanted is:
/usr/share/apport/apport-gtk -u 873809
And that is what I managed to run.

I am able to reproduce the same results when installing on the same
system the latest Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) x64 from the Desktop /
LiveCD. Updating bug description with the second release name.
Back to trusty Ubuntu 9.04 for the moment I guess. (shrug)
