Just adding some info. When I add the nomodeset flag to the kernel
boot parameters, the screen now appears, but fixed in 800x600 mode. I

I have the same problem on 12.04. Using XFCE. Skype uses 100% of one CPU all
the time (have an AMD Phenom II X6 1055T), even when not calling or receiving
calls. It just idles at 100%...

Any news about this? Please, I can't use Unity 3D because this. At any time my
session is closed and ALL MY WORK IS LOST. I'm using now Unity 2D, and I tried

Well yes, as it turns out the reference logo is already not forming a
proper circle, so since the splash artwork uses thickened gears the
misplacement remains.

I don't think the request makes much sense.
Overwriting the hard disk with random numbers (instead of zeros as proposed) is
what takes time.
However, this is an essential part of hard drive encryption and should not be
substituted by overwriting with zeros.

I can confirm the observations made by Achim.
I first tried the PPA with nouveau, and did not notice any visible
change.
When I activated the binary nvidia driver, however, the change was quite
obvious. The slowdowns are not entirely gone, but they disappeared for
the expo animation entirely,
I think it was not Ubuntu 12.04's bug but new nvidia drivers' bug.
And I am using Ubuntu 12.04 now.
