problem is caused by the power-saving mode in the Broadcom drivers,
which is enabled when the laptop is on battery by the script in /usr/lib
/pm-utils/power.d/wireless which runs iwconfig eth2 power on. Manually

The screen never blanks while vlc is running, even if vlc is not
playing, not a focused window, not even if vlc is minimised.
What should happen:
The screen should blank on its normal schedule if vlc is not currently
playing.

The driver for your printer is packaged in Synaptic Package Manager.
Open Synaptic and search for HL-1670N and install both of the programs that it
finds.
If the broken package stops the installation,open a terminal and run this:
sudo apt-get remove name of package
to un-install the
