Debian, Gnome and Remote Desktop. It appears to be entirely independent

The underlying issue here is that various changes were made to glib in
versions 2.31 and 2.32 which were incompatible with the existing Amanda
codeline.
When glib 2.32 was included into Precise, that caused the amanda package builds
to fail due to duplicate definitions of the g_queue_free_full()

OK, *another* follow-up. Installed wicd instead of network-manager. That
works!
Reverted kernel back to 3.2.0-25 (i.e. stock), nohwcrypt is 0 (off).
The background scanning and the ath9k module are at the root of this
problem, installing wicd is a work around.

dropbox installation does not seem to complete in Software Center, but
in fact Dropbox can be launched successfully for me using Unity.

I experience this problem with a 2011 imac and a thinkpad x120e both
have AMD graphics, both proprietary drivers (I will test the opensource
stack though).

I recently had to change my ISP due to some reasons, and now I can't
reproduce this bug. Still for information-
My older ISP was Reliance Communications India (for which I could
reproduce this bug) and I am unable to reproduce this with Bharti Airtel
Broadband. My router still remains the same, As
Vim, have you started the Dropbox daemon yet? On my system I ran in
terminal:
~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd
As well as running the nautilus part of Dropbox. Running both of these
together gave me the icon in the system tray, as well as notifications.
I don't know if it would be different in Kubuntu
