On many of my systems, the assignment of drives to letters depends on a
number of unpredictable factors, so it's much safer to use the UUID to
define arrays than /dev/sd[a-z]1.

(was) even if the system is frozen, the ssh terminal is active and is not aware
of freezing.

Oh! It's an f.d.o. project, not gnome as I mis-guessed.
I eventually found a report there, and it looks like it's been fixed in
the trunk this month. I can't tell if a release may be upcoming, or if
Ubuntu may want to incorporate this, sooner.
The patch does indeed rewrite this code, rather tha
OK, I tried those steps, and what I discovered is that the time lag
occurs for programs that would be expected to close slowly, like the
system performance monitor. Those programs close slowly whether Unity is
enabled or not, and a terminal window closes fast in both modes (with
and without Unity.)
Unfortunately we can't do anything unless some details of the crash are
provided.
Please check /etc/default/apport to make sure you have crash reporting
turned on in future.
