I just tried the merge proposal, and it works much less great for me.
The merge proposal changes don't improve the default scaling, which is

I managed to find a workaround by enabling autologin with nouveau
installed, then installing the nvidia driver and restarting.
Logging in and out works, the greeter shows, screen locking works etc.
The issue is clearly related to how the system boots and showing the gdm
greeter.

I tested this in an Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 GNOME 3.20 64-bit VM and found
that with the new update the issue goes away and the problem here is
fixed. Although it should be noted that after updating to the new

The reason this wasn't fixed in Ubuntu 16.04 is because it doesn't
affect the proper Ubuntu archive, rather only users who have the gnome3
ppa enabled which provides a newer version of gtk. That being said

Well, one way to work around this would be to have a bootcmd change
/etc/resolv.conf to not be a symlink. resolvconf only modifies
/etc/resolv.conf if it is a symlink into ../run/resolvconf/resolv.conf .
that said, resolvconf should probably be able to do what you want it to
do and it might be be

In cloud-init right now we have the following inputs of configuration
data, in increasing order of precedence.
a.) system configuration in /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg
b.) system configuration in /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg.d/*.cfg
these are increasing in C locale sorted order (thus they use XX-name.cfg ,
X
This is still not fixed in 16.04.1 LTS apparently as it has just
happened again and as I've said before update-manager doesn't actually
crash AFAICT.
