I have a kinda similar problem on xubuntu 18.04. And had that problem on
xubuntu 16.04.
After I type the password, there is only desktop wallpaper and mouse
pointer (it moves). Then I press Ctr-Alt-Del and go back to password

@Roman: it sounds like bumblebee is trying to load a module that has
been aliased to 'off' somewhere in your /etc/modprobe.d folder. Is the
configuration in /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf set to load nouveau,
perhaps? Or has the nvidia module been aliased to off by accident?

After I switch off the UEFI in BIOS, saved the changes and reboot the system. I
login the system and run the following command:
$ sudo apt upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly
Is your dock set to auto-hide?
If yes, then the dock should be moving out the way.
If no, then nautilus-desktop should be placing that popup in the clearly
defined desktop work area (that does not include under the dock).
