1) On 16.04 I was using nvidia driver from Ubuntu packages, but can't really
remember what version. I'm not sure if the history of package installation is
recorded somewhere.
On the other hand, I can try running 16.04 from USB stick with several
different versions of the driver.
I have found that using pinentry-gtk-2 is the only one that currently
performs a graceful fallback to tty. This has been my solution in the
interim. This still has an annoying behavior of not pulling the terminal
or application back into focus after entering your pin.
