Something very interesting I've just found out...
When I start the computer but do not login to a session...the computer is
visible from avahi client
When a user is connected...it is not visible anymore.
So the problem is during gnome startup I guess.

Just tried to add mem=4G iommu=off to kernel boot parameters.
Open /etc/default/grub and change the line :

Using Palimpsest (from Karmic) has fixed this issue as you can
disconnect AND power down any usb devices with it with just one click ;)
(You can even access S.M.A.R.T attributes from your external usb hard
drives). Haven't try sdparm command though...

Well, what if I want to use my modem ? It was working on Jaunty, so this is a
regression...and the above fix is just a workaround...
I know this is a proprietary driver, so we can't blame ubuntu dev...Anyway,
analog modems are less and less used so it's not a serious regression...

So I've done some more testing. It appears that when I'm on same local network,
the hang only lasts for a few seconds (still annoying though). It freezes when
the computer with cups server is shutdown but not when the ipp printer is
switch off.

There has been a new release of catalyst driver last week (9.9)
Maybe someone could try it out?. Though, I don't think the problem will
ever be solved unless to use open source driver, which is what you have
to do, even if it still missing some features, once we'll reach karmic+1
or karmic+2,
