I believe feisty's amarok version 1.4.5-0ubuntu6 had mp3 install script
related fixes. Make sure you've updated before trying to install mp3
support. I tested it a few days ago on a livecd and it worked fine for
me. Make sure universe/multiverse are enabled first.

That sounds like a pretty accurate description of the SMB collection
problem to me! :D I just hope there's enough information in these bug
reports to corroborate with that hypothesis.

What's actually going on here is that Amarok is crashing and then trying
to send a bug report with the crash info. Unfortunately, at the moment
this doesn't work well because Amarok tries to send the report via email
to kmail, which is a setting that

I've noticed that this does happen when playing from a CD, but for audio

I agree. Ubuntu is working on a program called apport that intercepts
crashes and sends them to launchpad. That's a great improvement over
the kmail requirement that currently seems to exist. Since Amarok is in
the Qt3-Qt4 transition now, this probably won't be able to be addressed
for a few

Hold on just a second. The only change required for this is to add
--with-libkarma to the debian/rules file in the package the next time
it's built. Now this might depend on a new library package, but that's
a small price to pay for having your mp3 player work with Amarok!
