Using latest from SVN for libvorbis, but 1.2.0 for oggenc still crashes.
Only using oggenc from latest from SVN makes it work.
This means the problem is solved by a newer version of oggenc, however
there is not yet a newer vorbis-tools release available and the changes
between 1.2.0 and SVN-latest
Backporting libvorbis-1.2.3 from Lucid to Karmic did not solve this
problem.

I think there is some communication mismatch.
As far as I understand, Gimp will not be "removed" from Ubuntu, it will
just not be included in a default installation and not included on the
LiveCDs. Anybody with internet access can install it like any other
package that is not immediately included

common problem. The install/update of some package fails because of out
