I have not used any PPA for Unity, and I got the same problem after
upgrading to 13.10. I did not have unity-lens-friends installed and I
just get a completely blank content are in the dash. I tried removing
(and reinstalling) all unity-lens-* packages but so far, no luck.

live-cd system (Ubuntu rescue-mix). Upstart did not rescan the /etc/init

Yes, Jaunty works great and hotplugging is back. I can recommend

Don't despair Russ, you can install the updates you are seeing without
problems. The new kernel update is just a repack of the former kernel
released a few days ago - I think someone forgot to flag the kernel as a
security-update.

can do is speculate. I think this is the deal: the patch is not just a
few lines of obvious bug-fixes, it is a rewrite of the way the bay and

with kacpid or kacpi_notify consuming all CPU but it appears after
resuming from suspend (to ram or disk) and not while running the system.
It is also interesting that at all three of us have Dell laptops. I

I can confirm this behavior, I also have an ATI graphics controller:
ATI Technologies Inc M24 1P [Radeon Mobility X600]
and have not been able to run any graphic intense java applications in Ubuntu
8.04.
The good news is that java graphics in Intrepid Beta works fine for me,

still cannot get java to use the OpenGL-pipeline, but at least
performance is much better. The example Lucas provided actually looks

When using jockey to install fglrx driver for my ATI Radeon Mobility X600, I
got a non-functional xorg.conf which leads to X starting up in fail-safe mode.

I can confirm this bug. I believe the description is somewhat misleading,
though. As far as I know, the xorg.conf is supposed to be bare-boned in hardy
to let xorg detect the hardware automatically. This is what fails horribly for
me as well, with the same symptoms. X starts up in failsafe mode

Hard for me to say what exactly caused this.
I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 7.10 and was at the time running VMWare
Workstation 6 in the background.
Right before the crash I uninstalled gnash and installed flashplugin-nonfree
since gnash hogged my CPU.

The first application to crash was actually OpenOffice Writer, trying to
open a Word-attachment from Thunderbird.
