Newbie here. Just wanted to report that installing the deb pkg fixed
the menu problem on my eee 1000, too. I also had the problem afterwards
of the desktop not displaying icons, not allowing you to save on it,
etc, but the gconftool-2 --set

I also just ran into this. After upgrading to Intrepid I had the 2.6.25
kernel (and no sound). Manually installing linux-generic got me the
2.6.27 kernel and sound works. I see I now have both linux-386 and
linux-generic installed -- should I remove linux-386?

Clicking the SAVE icon in the toolbar when the filename is still
"untitled" causes Calc to hang, probably while trying to launch a pop-up
prompt for a filename. Recovery file was blank.
1) OS Ubuntu 8.04
2) package openoffice.org release
This problem has been seen on Solaris Express Community Edition build
b87 too. Starting Mathematica with -defualtvisual, again solves it,
although editing the last line of /usr/local/bin/mathematica and adding
the option there means you dont have to remeber to do it.
