If I boot the laptop on battery then attach a mains supply the popping
usually stops, but not always. If I remove and then re-add the mains
supply then it does stop.

I looked at bootchart, and ureadahead doesn't get full throughput
Even though ureadahead reads everything in one go, and is heavily
optimised to read everything in the actual order it's on the disk, it
still has to skip over the bits it doesn't need.
This seek time is the same performance
Although apparently less pronounced, this still occurs in Saucy.
I couldn't get Trusty to boot to check it.
Intel has absolutely nothing to do with this.
