To correct myself, it's not really solved, but the annoying popup
message is gone. The message now (sometimes) appears through the desktop
notification system in the top right corner.

After around 6 weeks I got a freeze again.
My machine is running on a custom Ubuntu-2.6.32.11 kernel (patched for
the x201 internal GSM modem). I know that it's not an official one, but
pherhaps the following information can help anyway.
The visual effects have been disabled all the time. For
I can confirm this issue in Lucid. I got this checking-lock several
times and if I remember correctly, for me it actually happened only
after a suspend (closing the lid).
It's possible to switch to the console and kill gnome-screensaver-
dialog. Afterwards, a login with the login-dialog works

I'm also confused because of the update-notifier's behavior. I changed
the regular_auto_launch_interval to 0 (comment #53) and will see if it
changes the behavior to what I would expect by default. But at least
this option should be part of the GUI and not hidden somewhere in the
gconf-editor.

I guess most people will get this error using tmpfs in /etc/fstab
because they use a SSD in their system. So a quick fix is to simply add
a line for /var/log/apt as well - as proposed in
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EeePC/Using#Reducing%20Drive%20Writes
tmpfs /var/logtmpfs
Same here. I can also not reproduce it, but as I remember right, it
happend only with an attached Monitor. I had this problem once a day!
After disabling the visual effects I haven't seen X locks for around 10
days now.

I use version 2.30.0.1-0ubuntu3 of gwibber and I had the same problem as
discribed by Niko in comment #36. After I removed gwibber on my facebook
account I could authorize it with gwibber and the buttons appeared.
I also fully agree with Niko's assumption in comment #37!
So the bug is not yet

Same problem here. With strace I figured out that it stops while checking the
history in /var/log/apt/history.log.
If there is no directory /var/log/apt/ you will get a segmentation fault. Can
you please check this?
