FYI the situation is hilariously worse out-of-the-box in Jaunty (as of Alpha 3), at least on my Dell M1330. The brightness seems to change 4-6 times when using the hotkey once, so in my case I have 2-3 brightness levels instead of 8. However using acpi_backlight=vendor also fixes it in Jaunty. --
