I just installed guake and when I attempted to run it, I recieved the
error Guake can not init! Gconf Error. Have you installed guake.schemas
properly?
Manually installing the schemas with the following command fixed the
problem

I have the same problem. I did find that if I opened the Disk Utility
under System-Administration then the drives that were plugged in would
mount, but only the first time it was opened.

created an encrypted folder, which puts a read only passphrase file in
.ecrypt. Manually deleting the contents of .ecrypt lets the uninstall

I can confirm this problem, it's affecting both of my PC's running

run one test which illustrates the problem. In the attached dstat
output, I copied 3.4GB between two eSATA HDD. It started off fast (as
usual), but by the time the copy finished the dialog was

I took a chance and reinstalled my system with 32 bit 8.10, as
suggested. I've done some quick testing and my USB devices are
operating much faster, and the speed remains stable. Additionally, the
whole system is *far* more responsive. Previously, I couldn't even use

I just noticed that vmware is loading way faster now, down from about 3
minutes to 20 seconds to open a 768MB RAM virtual machine. That's a
major improvement.
Copying is still broken though.

I never got around to reinstalling. Rather than waste any more time on
this, I've moved on to the 8.10 beta. File copying is improved on my
system, but it's still not working reliably.
I've been copying some data (about 30GB for each test) from my local USB
drive to the my network server and

results, two normal boots, a stall that didn't resume until I had
switched to a different console, and a normal boot, but no clearlooks

I've since noticed that this problem is also affecting network transfers
- file copies across ethernet bottom out at 5MB/s, which, although
better than the sub 1MB/s I get on my flash drive, is still very
frustrating. On the plus side, the release candidate of Hardy allows

I've just reinstalled my system as Hardy beta, moving from Gutsy. I had
manually compiled Anjuta 2.4.0 on Gutsy and was using it to develop a
C++/Gtk application without any problems. After moving to Hardy, then
installing Anjuta from the repos,

pnpbios=off
to the grub boot options resolved this issue and both logging in and
sound are working now.

options which should look something like:

I'm getting this problem with both the AMD64 version of herd 3 and the
i386 version of herd 4 after installing on a Compaq V3118AU.
I don't know if it's a related problem or not, but while this is
happening I'm also getting sound looping when the gdm login screen
appears.
