I hit this bug again with a Xubuntu 12.04 to 14.04 upgrade. Seems likely

with the proprietary Nvidia drivers.
/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf had both greeter-session and user-session

For me, Totem can play this video.
Furthermore, running parole --xv false and then opening the file in
Parole again plays the video correctly.
