HaoCS, you were right after all, but I had to do one extra step. In CompizConfig Settings Manager (ccsm), I had to go to Preferences Profile: and select the profile called unity. I'm guessing that `unity --reset` resets that unity profile. But I was using my own profile with custom settings.
