I just did security update Linux Image 3.16.0.34-generic. It seems as if
every time that I do the next security update there is a problem as is
evident by this bug report: nvidia-331-updates kernel module failed to
build. I use this fix

Hi Bryce, I just put 8.10 on my wife's computer that has a 6100 Nvidia
chip on board. After much research and money spent with tech I opted to
use v96. It too has bugs and no support for 3D. Makes me wonder 9.04
will be like. I don't dare try to change my graphics driver. Crossing
my fingers.
Jamin, I did my complaining with Nvidia. Seems as if they put the blame
on Ubuntu. Ubuntu throws it right back at Nvidia. I figure that Ubuntu
will lose users and Nvidia will lose customers. Either way, this has
gone on for a year and 9.04 is almost here. Either way the consumer
doesn't buy
I resolved this issue by following J.A. Watson's how to replace

I have tried every suggestion to fix the nvidia driver and nothing is
working. From editing to trying other drivers, to using Envyng. Nvidia
does not recommend using any driver that Ubuntu has not recommended.
I'm not seeing a fix and after more than 24 hours on this problem I am

Ubuntu 8.10 is running Open Office 2.4. Above I saw mention of ver. 3.0.
Synaptic does not list 3.0. So my crashes are coming after updating
8.04 pre-install.

The dmesg command creates an extremely large readout. I am not even
sure that the terminal allows for the whole readout as the command did
not show at the top of the page after scrolling. Do you want me to send
this large readout?

Ante Karamatic, thanks for this assistance. z52 now printing. But to
answer your question, When you connect your printer to computer and
start gnome-cups-add, does it list any printer as autodetected? no
printer is autodetected. Attached lpinfo -v output below. Print config

Ok, Ante Karamatic, I did that:
OK, lexmarks :)
Could you put:
deb http://www.grad.hr/~ivoks/ubuntu/gutenprint ./
in your /etc/apt/sources.list, run apt-get update ; apt-get upgrade and
then try printing. Thank you!
Update completed. Upgrade completed. Test print failed. Rebooted.

Ante Karamatic, no, wrong assumption. I tried HP printer to see if it
worked. It did not. Which leads me to believe that there are serious
issues printing with dapper. That which I indicated above failed to
print on z52. Never thought to again try HP. Doubt that HP would work
now either.
Restricted modules package doesn't seem to exist in the Synaptic Package
Manager for AMD 686. Might this be the problem with 64 bit computers
freezing up running screensaver or xscreensaver?

Add the HP Deskjet 722c to the list of printers not printing. Seems to
me that the printers are not being found by the compter. Before, z52
gave up blank paper. Now nothing happens. I installed gutenprint
5.0.0~rc3. Still no printing. I don't think that any printer will work
with Dapper 6.06.
