Thanks for looking into this, and sorry for taking a while to get back
to you.
I've tried using the latest Hardy kernel as suggested, and it not boots
fine all the way into Gnome. So it looks like whatever's caused the
panic is fixed.
However my wireless card doesn't seem to work with this new

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22
Upgrading a working Feisty install to Gutsy; the install runs
successfully, computer restarts and fails to boot due to a kernel panic.
Selecting the old Feisty kernel (2.6.20) from the GRUB menu the PC boots
up fine.
In recovery mode
I still haven't managed to resolve this unfortunatetly, and this is
completely blocking me from using my Hauppauge media MVP to stream video
files.
I've tried building the latest VLC release (0.8.6b) from the source
tarball on the VLC website but it crashes in the same way. I've also

I'm seeing the same symptoms after having upgraded from Edgy to Feisty.
I'm also using VLC controlled by through telnet interface (to transcode
an MPEG4 file to an MPEG2 stream). I'm also using a Hauppauge MVP
running mvpmc at the other end.
The crash is completely reproducible on Feisty (this
Same bug is present in 0.9.3 (using the package in edgy-backports).

Great, thanks for that! I've built this fix on top of the latest 0.9.3
source, and this does indeed fix the problem.
That was quick... presumably this should be in the next soundconverter
release - maybe in time for the next Ubuntu.

gaim crashes whithout clear reason/action
It doesn't seem to lock up when it's not in gnome (i.e. in recovery
mode). Is there any way I can get the info while booted into gnome?
I can try leaving it running for a day in recovery mode and see if I hit
the lockup, but I doubt I will...

Random hardlocks experienced in Edgy
Well, following the suggestions in the forum thread above, I tried to
change to using the i386 kernel rather than the generic version of the
kernel. That seems to have fixed the very frequent hangs I was seeing.
This has also resolved the problem for at least two of the other people
