Unlike Hein van Dam - I do NOT get any message - just the freeze. This could come any firefox dependency. (e.g in libstdc++6 - since firefox 2.0.0.17 wants libstdc++5) However I do not believe it is in the (sun) java-plugin. It works with other browsers - and it worked with 3.0 beta in 8.04.

No Wait! The problem is just completely away. Just not easy to reproduce. On shutdown splash is allways there - but on boot it is only there sometimes. Monitor is not idle - the screen is just black. (The menu-button works). Just before X starts everything gets red for about 0,25 second then red
