wireless network at home, I can get 2.1-2.3 mb/s to a NAS machine over

Whilst it sucks that establishing a ppp link is more of a mission than it needs

showing mad numbers of fds left open (though the scripted test case to
reproduce the problem noted above by Martin Pitt *does* cause an
increase in open file handles for udevd).

Fortunately, I've had a little more experience with Debian (and hence,
the underlying Ubuntu subsystem).
Dropping to a console, repeated rounds of:
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get install -f
finally get you through. It really seems that the upgrade from 9.04 to
9.10,
