Sorry for the delayed and partial response. My computer told me that it needed
more space in the C: partition to de-fragment the file system. I have just
finished rebuilding the drive partitions after Windows software trashed the
thing. fsarchiver is wonderful!

I guess it's only another 4 months to wait before Lucid LTS, so I'm ok

Just to share, I've experienced the system hang twice so far while using the
two linux-backports-modules-*
Urgh, a new kernel can sometimes take very long to get into the official Ubuntu
repositories.
Although I wonder if the problem with AR928X adapters not being able to conduct
regular wireless activity and scanning for new networks concurrently is a
driver issue or the adapter's inherent fault.
I've since switched to WICD which has been flawless for the last 18 hours.
To be fair, the problems might be due to NetworkManager or wpa_supplicant.
NM keeps wpa_supplicant constantly scanning, while WICD stops scanning once a
connection has been established.

What I've noticed after about a day's usage was that there were no more
messages in dmesg, but there would still be periods of zero activity

I had the same problem with distribution 9.04 on a fresh install.
The ACPI never worked out of the box with my 3 years old laptop.
I never managed to get the computer going to sleep when I shut the panel
(screen).

I updated also from 9.04 to 9.10 Beta yesterday. I had the same issues
with the Firefox fonts. I tested with a fresh user profile and it works
correctly. After reading Jeans note, I deleted my ~/.fonts.conf,
restarted my Gnome session and viola my Firefox looks like it should be.

Tried to install 4 times on the Dell GX-270 that I have used previously
and got failures (screen lock up) anywhere from reading the release
notes to 82% installed. So I tried on a GX-280 and voila! success.
This was on the same hard drive that was used during the

The install program was extremely slow, even for a CD.

There was some doubt expressed about the hard drive I was using for the
Karmic install, so just to be sure I bought another drive and installed
Karmic on it. All the errors that were originally there are still there
and unfortunately I can't keep Karmic running long enough to do any
useful
Confirmed. I reported this in bug #416660 (Alpha 5) and 432815 (Alpha 6) also
on a Dell Optiplex GX-270.
