I did a fresh install of Karmic on my Dell Latitude and this problem

computer boots up (just before Gnome loads). The one problem with this
fix is it briefly displays the terminal screen just before gdm loads,
which isn't nice visually, but it at least makes the computer usable.

Sorry- I just realized this was a different bug than the one I actually
meant to look up. Windows AD shares work fine now, but I don't use
password-protected SMB shares, so I can't actually confirm that this
exact bug is fixed. Sorry for the confusion.

I just installed Jaunty on a test machine, and the Network browser
works!!!
uPnP devices show up, and if I click on an MS-AD resource- it prompts me
for my login credentials (just like way back in Gutsy).
So- it appears this whole mess is finally fixed in Jaunty.

requiring authentication? That's where this problem creeps up. It
(Nautilus/gvfs) works just fine on open shares, but anything requiring
authentication will fail (and in an MS ADS network- will generally get
your account locked-out).
Agreeing with the last several posts. This seems to be a growing trend-
the Milestone is more important than actual system stability/usability.
This became very noticeable to me with Hardy, which has major network
usability issues that still haven't been fixed in Intrepid.

that is related to the problem itself, and it is always a very-bad idea
to mess with file permissions on system-created files like this. You
would likely create a stability or security issue.

I installed Debian Etch on a test machine, and this problem doesn't
exist. Either they figured out how to fix it, or they didn't use the
same buggy gvfs implementation that Ubuntu is. I haven't tried a from

As John indicated with reference to Ari's post- one should symlink the
libraries, not copy them. In any case- I was unable to get this to work

pretty much impossible. This isn't really Ubuntu's fault since it is a

is worse. With Hardy- while you couldn't browse shares through Nautilus,
you could manually mount them using the Connect to Server... dialog in
Places. You would get an error

was at least the option of manually attaching to the share using the
Connect to server... dialog. That doesn't work in Intrepid.(!) One
gets the usual errant Cannot display location... error message, but it
shows up in Places

Just to clarify- this was a brand new install of Ibex Alpha 3 from
distribution CD. After one round of updates- started getting almost
everything redirected but Apt isn't picking them up. Now I can't
update or install much of anything. I had the same problem on the same
machine earlier with Alpha
Unfortunately a gvfs update hit the repositories in the last couple of
days. This fixed my patched version, and the version in the
repositories is still broken. I can't believe this is taking this long
to fix.
I'm not blacklisting gvfs from updates because I keep hoping it will get
fixed, but for

Couldn't have said it better myself. Somewhere along the line- I missed
the build-dep command. I was able to compile it, but it took close to
an hour to track down all the dependencies by hand. Thanks for posting

first time. It accesses my keyring now once I have saved my login, and
opens the server when I double-click on it.

I had a hard time collecting all the dependencies and getting autogen to
work, but after about an hour of Googling and tinkering I was finally
able to get it the patched version of gvfsd-smb-browse compiled and
installed. I'm sure just getting the binary posted here would have
worked fine, but I

I hadn't tried not including a username. My experience with Windows
shares anyway is that I have to include both a username and domain name-
or I don't get prompted for a password and get locked out of the domain
(by Active Directory).
The problem is the same on my home Samba
I've noticed a couple of other things...
As said earlier- you can mount a share if you use Places = Connect to
server and then use an actual share name. There is no way to browse
shares through Nautilus. This is a real pain if you have a large network
with lots of servers and shares.

SSH/SFTP Not Working in Nauilus (Another GVFS Problem?)
I can definitely confirm this. I believe the update that caused this hit
the repositories sometime after Monday afternoon, April 21st, as that's
when my Java apps that use DNS stopped working. I've got bugs open with
Java and my application devs for this.
I'll try the fix posted by Gary. This
