This bug is still present in Gutsy Tribes 5. The workaround is :
sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx
sudo aticonfig --initial
sudo aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv
startx

I can - unfortunatly - confirm this problem (well, sort-a). When I try

The configuration is not lost when upgrading to Feisty if you are using
the fglrx driver, it does only affect to the VESA driver. With the
packages from a comment of related bug #89853 you can also rebuild the

Fixed th problem by intsalling xorg-driver-fglrx and reconfiguring by
using dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and choosing fglrx as the driver.
Rebooted the machine and it started working.

My system is an ASUS A6J with an ATI X1600 mobility.
I can also confirm that the latest live-cd (the release candidate) will not
start X.
