Okay, switching to EXA acceleration by default for -ati is something I'm
considering for Jaunty, if it doesn't incur too many regressions. Does
setting EXA *not* fix the performance issue for anyone?
(If you spot additional issues when testing EXA, please report them as
separate bugs from this
Switching from XAA (default?) to EXA seems to resolve the problem for
me. However, now my compiz effects seem to studder :(
Here is the Device section from my xorg.conf. I also tuned on a few
other options which may have an effect:

i have this problem too.. as Captain Chaos said it is not just firefox
exhibiting this, the desktop effects are also laggy and i also have a
video flickering problem which is bug number #289003, maybe these two
are related? and my graphic cards model is Radeon HD 2350.

With desktop effects on
Hi Bryce,
Unfortunately I don't have the same hardware had when first reported
this bug. For that reason, or others, I don't experience this bug
anymore. Now on my two computers (one with an nvidia card and other with
a radeon 3740 using fglrx) I don't have any problems with slow scrolling
in
I'm experiencing this problem on a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop, which has
an ATI Mobility Radeon X300 chipset. I have attached my Xorg.0.log file
(produced using the daily build live CD of 15 October). This is from a
straight boot, so with normal desktop effects and without proprietary
drivers.
**
By the way, it is not just Firefox exhibiting this behaviour, at least
on my system. Evolution (both scrolling the list of emails as well as
scrolling the contents of an email) and Document Viewer at least show
the same behaviour. With desktop effects on the scrolling is very slow,
choppy and
Hi Antonio,
I'd like to upstream this bug, however we don't have sufficient
information to report it up. Could you please boot into a session where
you're seeing this performance regression with compiz enabled, and
attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from that session?
Also, if possible please
Scrolling is still slow with Compiz activated. Tested with the Ubuntu Intrepid
Live CD Alpha 6.
Display controller: ATI TV350 (Radeon 9550).

When running compiz in Ubuntu as well as compiz-kde in Kubuntu, I
noticed a lag when scrolling both in firefox and konqueror. Turning off
compiz removes the lag.
I checked this also with the latest Intrepid alpha 3 live cd (I cannot

Thanks - could someone check if the issue also still occurs with
Intrepid?

The lagging bug appears with intel 965 too.
Metacity as compositor is very slow.
Try out the XFCE's window manager, it's very fast and don't lagging when
scrolling.
When compiz enabled, start a terminal
killall compiz.real xfwm4
Then run
xfce-setting-show
to enable composite manager and
The same problem on 8.04 with XCOMPMGR or with composition manager = enabled
in metacity-section of the configuration-editor.
I think it has nothing to do with Compiz

You
I'm having the same problem. This occurs in 7.10 and 8.04. Using
Firefox, any version. As I'm typing this I'm running 8.04 and Firefox
3.0b3. Listen to this: I also did a clean install of Linux Mint which is
based on 7.10. Compiz is enabled by default and I used Firefox 1.0.0.8.
But the problem
I have the same problem, I'm using Ubuntu Gutsy.
My Video Card is an ATI Radeon 200M (Dell Inspiron 1501), with the last
propietary driver (8.01; and xgl disabled). The scroll with Firefox,
Opera, Epiphany, Netscape and Flock lags a lot. When I disable the
effects goes back to normal. So it's
I think I solved my problem.
Last weekend I did 'fresh install' of 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. Just saved my
Home folder to an external HD then installed. Since then there has been
no problems with the graphics. Everything is how it was under 7.04
Feisty Fawn. No slow-down, no jumpy scrolling in Firefox,
Happening here too, wifh Firefox 2.0.0.11, Ubuntu 7.10
P3 866 - 320 megs RAM - ATI Radeon 9250 (256mb ddr2)
Perfect fluidity while scrolling webpages with compiz off (and even while
looking @ youtube videos).
With compiz on: laggy scrolling even in the simplest of webpages, like, google.
So
I'm thinking it could be the open source ATI graphics driver that is
being used, xserver-xorg-video-ati and its compatibility with Compiz.
Maybe I should load Hardy and see if the fglrx driver in the
repositories improves anything. Tried using Envy and it totally borked
my system. Since upgrading
Ok, 7.10, with Nvidia 8300GS on a Dell 530n and the restricted
proprietary driver.
I switch Normal desktop effects and Firefox (and Smartweasel) start to
have rendering problems when you scroll a page. It looks like the page
has been roughly fed through a fax machine and folded over onto itself
As I said, there was no problems with compiz and the intel drivers when
running under 7.04, only since the upgrade to 7.10.

Now I have a new pc with an nvidia GeForce 6100 with a AMD Athlon 64 bit
and scrolling with compiz in gutsy is as smooth as it can be :). I'm
using 32 bit version of Ubuntu. KD are you with Gutsy?
--
With desktop effects on scrolling is slow and laggy in firefox other browsers
Yes, I am using gutsy. When I scroll through a page the screen in very
'jumpy'. This has only started once I upgraded. If I turn the desktop
effects ON there is no change, but all my windows become slow clumsy.
I had been using compiz in 7.04 and everything looked amazing, not a
single problem.
So this is probably a bug in compiz or in the intel drivers.

I have an Intel GMA 950 card, Firefox scrolling is clumsy even with the
desktop effects off. I have yet to get Compiz working, very slow and
clumsy when turned on.
A number of threads on the forums refer to these problems but no
solutions yet!

I am pretty sure this bug isn't in the mesa package. Rather in the
xserver-xorg-video-ati or in the compiz package...

I am having the same problem. (Using a Radeon 9500 Pro)
Another workaround would be enablng fglrx drivers instead of ati and
running compiz off of XGL. For me this is not an option, because of XGL
limiations and it's huge amount of bugs...

It would be nice to know if users with other graphic cards (nvidia and
intel) experience this same problem, to narrow the possible packages
that have the bug.
