I am having the same problem on Jaunty, it seems this bug isn't hardware specific. Looked everywhere, tried everything ... big waste of time... This is a very old bug, and no one seems to be doing anything about it. -- Burner not working in 7,04 8.04 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/114122

I was having a similar problem with an IDE CD burner, it wouldn't erase a CD-RW from k3b or wodim on the command line. However, when I connected up an external USB burner it worked fine. Don't know if this helps shed any light on the problem. Relevant sections from lshw are below, I can provide

When I upgraded from 6.06 to 7.04, I'm having errors burning CDRs. The hardware hasn't changed at all between version upgrades, so I don't think hardware is the issue. At first I thought it might be wodim, since that's replaced cdrecord. However, I switched to cdrdao and am still having problems.

I'm also having this problem since I upgraded to 7.04. No problems previously nor in Windows even now. In the forum some people report that the problem solved after the last kernel update but that's not my case. I've also tried a different kernel (i386 instead of generic, ie x86x64 in my case)
