I can confirm that Ubuntu sets the host-name field properly on DHCP query and
conforms to the RFC.
If the server doesn't parse that properly and updates the DNS accordingly, it's
a failure of the server not the client.

As it seems its a bug in multid on the fritzbox. Ubuntu is sending the
rfc-standard informations to the fritzbox but the fritzbox itself is not
able to handle that correctly. not all fritzboxes are affected some are
using other versions of multid. multid is optimized for windows (which

for me using HOSTNAME.fritz.box works just fine without any fiddling in
the network settings. depending on the OS (e.g. OS X) i can even solely

This bug has been partly fixed in the recent Ubuntu versions (don't
remember which version exactly).
Now there is an option to specify DHCP Client ID in the System
Preferences Network Connections Edit IPv4 Settings. Fritz.box
uses this ID as host name if not empty.
Is there any chance ubuntu
Officially, the client identifier should be staring with 1 if you follow
it up with the mac address, like 1:YO:UR:_M:AC:AD:DR. That's because
dhcp3 treats the whole thing as an opaque byte sequence, whereas
http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2132#section-9.14 says the first byte
should state what kind

Some more explanation why this is a bug.
I use 3 computers at home. They all get their IP addresses through DHCP
from FRITZ!Box DSL router. IP addresses sometimes change. Especially
because I use both - cable and WLAN. There is no way to connect from
one computer to the other using hostname.
