This periodic call to Register is from telepathy-ofono. This has been
removed due to other causes (see bug 1226145), so it would be
interesting to test with the branch proposed there.

Apologies Tony, I failed to enter any machine specific info.
So, this was observed on a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I've double checked
with today's image and the Operation currently not available messages
only appear when I don't have a SIM in the phone.

As for the socket IO...
On Touch, ofono is configured to use the rilmodem driver, which
communicates with a daemon process called rild, which manages the modem.
