Still broken in lucid x64.
Added fonts to /home/USERNAME/.icons and selected via the appearance
dialog but they only worked in certain programs, resulted in the cursors
changing every few seconds. Followed Peekie's instructions in order to
get the fonts to show up the same everywhere.

Installing a mouse cursor theme has kept me busy for a couple of hours. I agree
with others that you should be able to change it in the Mouse settings.
Despite all solutions in the above I found a way to change the cursors:
- Download the tar-ball from e.g. gnome-look.org
- Extract it as root to

The obvious first step is to remove it - purge gcursors from your
system. It's not included with Intrepid.
The best update that Intrepid could make is for themes to be installed
to the shared directory. I currently have three bookmarks in my Root
Nautillus bookmarks - the first is /home/ben/.theme

same here, i cant change or install any new cursors, and im getting the same
