For me the 2.6.25er Kernel series also fixes the problem.
Just installed 2.6.25.10 and sound worked fine right after reboot.

I have problem with sound ever since the upgrade to Hardy. The sound
comes and goes from the speaker but on my headphone it plays smoothly,
no loss of sound. I am really annoyed with sound playing intermittently
on the speaker. All the kernel 2.6.24.XX version still gives sound

2.6.25.7 and it works.
So I suppose there is a regression in the 2.6.24 series hopefully the bug has

I have a strange problem with my sound card since the last 2 kernel upgrades. I
did an upgrade from gutsy to hardy about two weeks after the hardy release and
the sound worked until the last two kernel upgrades.
It seems like the problem started after upgrading from linux-image-generic
2.6.24.17
I just checked the modules in my /lib/modules to make sure that there is
only one of the snd-hda-intel.ko file in each set of modules. Here's the
output of the find command that I ran:

running from CD gave me *very* quiet sound.
Upgrading left me with no sound
I had error messages about unknown symbols (sorry I didn't capture them)
I've reverted to an earlier kernel and sound works fine again :-)

I'm experiencing something SIMILAR but not quite. There aren't any errors
output to dmesg, everything looks okay, but I still don't have any sound.
This is a regression from Feisty and Gutsy. I'm now running Kubuntu Hardy RC,
x64_86.
I triple-checked alsamixer and nothing there is muted.

I don't think it is related to BIOS.
I've tried the -rt kernel and sound is back.
the problem seems linked to missing kernel modules compilation options,
I have the same dmesg output as Kasimir with a full list of "Unknown symbol"
when using the generic kernel.

About BIOS : I also checked inside : it is very simple, not a lot of options,
no PNP options, no tricky things, only the base. So, nothing to play with for
explaining the bug.
In addition, I just tell that Vista (removed now) on that Laptop was producing

Susan: your bug does not look like a duplicate. With this bug, there is
no sound at all, as the system doesn't see any soundcards (cat
/proc/asound/oss/sndstat tells us "no soundcards").
