I'm using karmic now, and the problem is no longer there. The disk works
reliable on firewire.

Hi Martin,
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .
If it remains an issue,

Yes, it is Y and I didn't set this option explicity.
Did you use one of the other OSs,
It seems that I have the PL3507A
My condolences. It's junk. All bets are off.
For whatever reason the disk is working reliable with my current
intrepid again with 2.6.27-7.14 altough I see no firewire or sbp related
changes in the linux-image changelog between 2.6.27-4 and 2.6.27-7.

About the suggested workarounds:
serialize_io=1 is on by default anyway, hence specifying this option does
nothing. (serialize_io=0 is too buggy hence not used by default.) Please
check if sbp2 is loaded in serialized mode even if you don't provide this
option explicitly:
# cat
It is not a hardware issue, as this hardware works with all other
operating systems (macos, windows xp, windows vista, grml, suse) and
ubuntu 8.04 out of the box, so this is a regression. So, if the ubuntu
guys don't want to fix it because it maybe is a kernel bug that is also
present in the
Thanks for following up. I'm closing this report because this is a
hardware issue and a workaround is to set the options serialize_io=1 or
max_speed=1 .
To set it permanently add a file /etc/modprobe.d/sbp2 with the following
line options sbp2 serialize_io=1
Thanks for your time and don't
Thanks. Can you try to load the sbp2 module with the options
serialize_io=1 or max_speed=1 and tell if it helps ? For your
reference, detailed informations can be found at
http://www.linux1394.org/sbp2.php
It works with these options.
