I don't think this entry relates to a bug in NM. Rather settings on the
user's computer cause NM to malfunction. By following the steps in this
report (and the link therein) one should be able to get NM up and
running again, without much effort.

got NM to run again, yet device is unmanaged.
to get NM running check whether you have old versions of libnl*
installed in /usr/lib or /usr/local/lib (see
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=739056)
for the unmanaged device problem i have no solution yet. nonetheless
nm-applet panel icon is gone, but:
$ ps -ef|grep Netw
root 5285 1 0 11:41 ?00:00:00 /usr/sbin/NetworkManager
root 5299 1 0 11:41 ?00:00:00 /usr/sbin/nm-system-settings
--config /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf
root 5761 5285 0 11:41 ?
thanks for your interest and recommendation.

i tried to set /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf
manage=true, but that didn't seem to improve anything. in fact, after
this change my wifi was down and stayed down until i reset the previous
change.
nm-tool doesn't launch since 'apparently' no NM is running. nm-applet
