I'm not getting very far on this.
I downloaded the 2.6.32 kernel as per your instructions and installed it
using gdebi on my 9.10 system. It boots fine and appears to run fine.
The test you requested runs a bit differently than documented on the
wiki.

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/, or you can add 2.6.32
kernel to your Karmic system, and after your test, delete it.
Please take care of your MBR if you finally use a separate HDD.

Maybe this problem only affects Canadian models. So the same problem

perfectly on this model before, but I can't recall exactly how I did it! I
seem to recall searching for ubuntu alternate hibernation method a release
or three back...
