Thanks for your offer to help!
However after some changes (uninstalled mplayer, ran Computer Janitor,
and removed a 2nd user) suspend now works again.
The only difference is that the display flashes up and clicks right
before everything goes dark, but I hope that's ok.

@ChrisHeller
Can you post your /var/log/pm-suspend.log file here.
In my case it was a script which was stopping the Sleep / Hibernate mode
from starting.
But the pm-suspend.log will help in seeing what is happening.

I have the same problem. Worked perfectly on 8.10 not anymore on my Kubuntu
9.04.
Now after hibernation I get to the Login screen.
@Solitaire: I don't have the file /etc/pm/sleep.d/07-stop-play.sh.
Maybe its related. If I try to switch to another user session I get a
blank screen and nothing
@crock
does the same happen when you suspend?
check your /var/log/ directory for pm-suspend.log
look to see of there are any error codes and see what script was trying to run.

If I remove the script /etc/pm/sleep.d/07-stop-play.sh The laptop
suspends.
Looks like their is a problem either with the 07-stop-play.sh script or my
laptop.
Can anyone see a problem with the script?
Or what other info i need to attach..

something similar happend to me: after upgrading from 8.10 to 9.04 i could not
suspend/hibernate anymore (some kind of logout happend - after login network
was disabled).
But I had '2.6.28-12-server' enabled. After switching to 2.6.28-12-generic i
can suspend correctly and the restart works
I've updated to Kernel 2.6.28-12-generic
This has made No Diffrence. Suspend and Hibernate still do not work.
