For anyone on Lucid, I have uploaded a version of Lucid's libdrm to my
PPA which has this patch:

This patch is supposed to fix many of the freeze problems that has
occurred lately. The PPA is at

it turns the whole system unusable. It totally freezes Ubuntu (can't

I have uploaded an older version of mesa to my "old" PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~gomyhr/+archive/old/+packages . By testing this,
we can find out if this is caused by a bug in mesa which is introduced
after version 7.5.
Unfortunately, installing it is probably not as easy as just adding the

The strange thing is that in Kubuntu 9:10 none of this happens and the
video performance is good.

Oh, tested Kubuntu Karmic beta, and there's NO such problem in it.

Sorry for taking too long. I've been reporting to the wrong bug.
Here's the situation on Beta:
Confirmed: still happens on Karmic Beta. And it's even worse. Worse than
Alpha 1! It's freezing before I even get the chance to click on
anything. I had the chance only once, and when I opened a window,

Just tested Karmic Alpha 4. Desktop loads now, but it still freezes,
good news is that now it takes longer, and I'm able to deactivate the
special effects, then it doesn't freeze anymore.

Karmic alpha-3 is now ready for testing. We really need the logs from
the newer versions to take this any further. You should be able to get
this via a LiveCD if you install openssh-server and ssh in from another
computer. Otherwise, you may try to install the LiveCD image to a USB

because of the fade animation. But I couldn't deactivate the effect
Well, next I'd like to forward this issue upstream, but first it must be
retested on latest development version of Karmic to make sure the issue
still happens there with the latest code. ISO images are available at
