my random system freezes (independent from browser use) got fixed when I upgraded my wireless drivers to the linux-backports-modules-compat-wireless-2.6.35-lucid-generic package. I also have Atheros hardware (ath5k), and not a single freeze since the upgrade. Kernel is 2.6.32-25-generic. --

I TAKE IT ALL BACK. The new maverick kernel did NOT fix the problem. It just took a very long time to replicate. The only fix, so far, is to use the MadWiFi driver, compiled from source, every time there is a kernel upgrade, and the madwifi driver is kind of bad... drops connections a lot.
