Mathew Garreth just looked at the problem and thinks this might be a
udev problem.
We blacklisted ath_pci and now thinks work fine. We added ath_pci to
/etc/modules and that works around the issue:-)
I do not have a /var/log/udev on my system, so I can not attach it.

Please attach /etc/iftab -- this usually means that you have not got
arp 1 on the end of the MAC address line for your madwifi-driven card

It's added automatically by the installer (which is the only thing that
writes entries to that file).
It wasn't added for a brief period during a development cycle (dapper, I
think)

The boot process stops for several minutes in the udev script. That is
right after the bluetooth stuff is initialized. There is no output
during or after that hang, so it is not noticeable in the dmesg output.
What else can I try?

That hang
Oh, I did that. That is why I know it gets stuck in the udev init
script.
It does not produce any output after inserting the bluetooth modules and
just sits there. A couple of minutes later it continues and the udev
init script exits with return code 0.
Switching to upstart does not change
Not sure where else to guess the reason for this.

This still happens with kernel 2.6.17-8-generic.
Still hangs while executing the loading hardware drivers init script.
What can I do to help debug this? It is a *really* annoying behavior.

I'm not sure where in your dmesg you are seeing this hang. I see three
places where the kernel stops outputting messages for a short period.
6 seconds after mounting the rootfs (could be initramfs preparing the
root filesystem and executing init).
9 seconds between netfilter and ACPI.

This still happens with kernel 2.6.17-7-generic.
The hang happens in the loading hardware drivers init script. It does
not return till after the freeze.

point and boots up as expected.
