Title:
[Edgy regression] Hostap driver for PRISM2 wifi card not working
This bug never got fixed as far as I am aware but would have been fixed
methinks if the product ID information that I provided had been
forwarded upstream to the hostap_cs maintainer. The original report was
filed more than 3 years ago (not by me though I had a vested interest)

Unfortunately it seems this bug is still an issue. Can you confirm this
issue exists with the most recent Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 release -

A fix has been released as detailed by me in the bug comments; all that

I observed a similar behavior after upgrading my ThinkPad from edgy to feisty:
My orinoco gold pcmcia card stopped working.
Strange enough it got irq 4 assigned which was supposed to be reserved for irda.
The solution was to disable in yenta_socket the probing of isa irqs.
In the options file in
There is also the mention of a missing device id over in Bug #97172

I have solved the hard lock problem I was experiencing above. I am now
running feisty 7.04 beta with the low-latency kernel. I assume the same
effect for the generic kernel. I patched the hostap_cs module in the
kernel source as described above first and rebuilt the kernel. My
wireless card worked
I have succeeded in writing a patch using diff but realised afterwards
that I had done it on the already patched ubuntu linux-source package
from the repositories. I don't know but I think I should have done it to
the pristine kernel sources so that the patch can be added to the ubuntu
kernel
Well it seems one thing leads to another. If I boot my laptop with the
wireless pcmcia card inserted then it hard locks the machine about half
way through the boot process. Booting into single mode shows me this
just after the kernel registers the hostap driver:
Unexpected IRQ trap in vector 30
Just reifying the fact that it's fixed in feisty.

[Edgy regression] Hostap driver for PRISM2 wifi card not
Hurray! I have just patched and compiled the hostap_cs driver and it
works! I don't know (yet) how to write a patch but this is what I did:
lspcmcia -v:
Socket 0 Bridge:[yenta_cardbus] (bus ID: :02:03.0)
Configuration: state: on ready: unknown
I tried yesterday on feisty, the bug is still present for my card.
How can i help ?

...and also please keep in mind, that there are (at least) TWO bugs:
1) The hostap_cs module is blocked by another module (like prism2_cs/orinoco_cs)
2) The hostap_cs failes to probe a card (as of a missing pcmcia id/string)

[Edgy regression] Hostap driver for PRISM2 wifi card not working any
I have just installed a basic command-line version of feisty herd 4 on a
usb pen drive. The kernel version is 2.6.20 BUT the bug is still there!
My PCMCIA wireless card picks up the orinoco_cs driver which works
(albeit only up to channel 11 though this may be hardware restriction).
If I blacklist
To find the pcmcia IDs you can lspcmcia -v (in pcmciautils). Given you have a
prism based and not a hermes based card, it should be possible to add the IDs
to drivers/net/wireless/hostap/hostap_cs.c. Search for PCMCIA_DEVICE_MANF_CARD.
You may want to check if the IDs are already present and are
Joe, you should check out bug #63989
Are you sure that the prism2_cs driver isn't taking over your card, thus
preventing hostap_cs from loading?

[Edgy regression] Hostap driver for PRISM2 wifi card not working any more
Some quick googling revealed:
http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/linux-pcmcia/2006-February/003298.html
The problem is, that the pcmcia ids are NOT unique, since some hermes based
cards and prism based cards share the 0x0156 / 0x0002 .
The hermes based cards are incompatible with the hostap
I can confirm this bug on an IBM Thinkpad X30 when booting from the Edgy
LiveCD.
Initially my wireless interface did not show up at all. Unloading
hostap_pci, prism2_pci, and orinoco_pci then reloading orinoco_pci fixed
the problem.

As mentioned above ( https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.17/+bug/62685/comments/15 ) the blacklisting does the trick
for me. However, after longer periods in suspend mode the WLAN is
somehow disabled. I have to sudo modprobe -r hostap_pci sudo
modprobe hostap_pci to
I'm not entirely sure what's going on here, but it might be an edgy-

control my hardware. In previous releases, prism2_pci wasn't built, so

[Edgy regression] Hostap driver for PRISM2 wifi card
I just got bit by this as well. My prism2 card was working fine in
dapper using the orinoco drivers. I upgraded to edgy, and the card
didn't work at all. I blacklisted prism2_pci, and now it works again.

[Edgy regression] Hostap driver for PRISM2 wifi card not working any more
I just upgraded from Dapper to Edgy yesterday - and after reboot my wlan
(prism2 card) was not working. However blacklisting orinoco_pci and
prism2_pci in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist seems to do the work for me -
but an automatic solution would be preferable.

[Edgy regression] Hostap driver
I am experiencing the same problems in an up-to-date edgy. Has the fix
been released because the problem still exists on my machine? My wifi
card worked well with the hostap drivers in dapper. My card details are
similar to Pascal's above:
dmesg output:
orinoco 0.15rc3 (David Gibson [EMAIL
** Description changed:
Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-10-generic
On dapper, i was affected by bug #41652, so that i had to blacklist orinoco
kernel modules to make my prism2 wifi card work in wpa crypted wireless network.
This blacklist made hostap-cs module load automatically
Here is the result of

But i was wrong saying my card is a prism 2. It is in fact a prism 1

- The by default loaded module is orinoco_cs. (same as in dapper)

This doesn't appear to me to be fixed entirely. My card doesn't get
prism2_cs anymore (prism2_cs doesn't even exist in 2.6.17-10.33! Was
that supposed to happen?) but it still doesn't get hostap_cs. That bug
is really Bug #41652 though.

It's quite likely that hostap_cs is missing your card ids, or something.

Matthew, I'll get you those numbers tomorrow but hostap_cs gets loaded
when I insert the card just fine, it's just that orinoco_cs also gets
loaded and it always wins. Unless I misunderstood this bug was going to
be fixed by giving hostap_* higher priority than prism2_* and orinoco_*.

This bug means that no prism2 or similar devices will work out of the
box, despite there being perfectly good drivers in the kernel, and are
even loaded into memory. Therefore I think the importance of this bug
should be pushed to high.

I absolutely agree that this should be marked high priority. The
prism2_ drivers don't even begin to support the wireless extensions and
won't work at all out-of-the-box for most users. The hostap driver has
long been regarded as the best driver for the prism 2 series chipsets
and it's the only
